Problem solved. The error showed up in /var/log/messages not /var/log/maillog. Had to 
do with an error I introduced in my 
header_checks.regexp file that produced that error message. Pretty tricky but 
certainly logical. One clue was to use http://www.alltheweb.com as a search tool for 
the errors rather than google.
