Hmm, ok thanks. Our current veryyy old webmail platform does show
unread mails when using POP3, not exactly sure how. Anyway, if modern
webmail platforms don´t try to support POP3 (due to its limitations)
then I guess Ill have to look at using an IMAP based solution...

POP3 as Webmail Backend is a "hack". There is no such thing like
read/unread or the like in POP3 protocol and implementing it at IMP
side would be a PITA i guess, so your option is to use IMAP or loose
features.
