Ah, I wasn't aware of that.  Thanks for pointing that out.  But how
does it work?  Does this API call do the (re-)setting of \Deleted flags
and all that?  Or is there some extended IMAP command that I'm not
familiar with which allows this to be done easily?

UID EXPUNGE. Part of UIDPLUS extension (which almost every IMAP server implements).
