Surely, at least in the abstract, this is more complex for data
consumers than simply pulling a field from the object. If you want to
advance the argument that a geocoder needs to have all that stuff
anyway, I suppose that could be reasonable. But certainly attaching
`addr:state=*` to imported address points totally avoids any
possibility that the geocoder would get it wrong.

I suppose you're going now to argue that it wastes space in the
database. I suppose that could be a fair argument, but I certainly
don't want to open the can of worms regarding what tags might or might
not be valuable enough to spend database space on them. Given how
contentious everything else on these mailing lists is, that discussion
would be a never-ending stream of acrimony.

I'm probably prejudiced against addr:state because I'm accustomed to the
NYC address import, which lacks not only state but also city ... and
nonetheless seems to work fine in various applications. (Omitting city
may have been a poor choice because of the use of neighborhoods for city
names in Queens addresses... Queens again.)

I've never given too much thought to the extra software complexity
necessary to make these applications "work fine." Probably not a bad
idea to work on a few consumer-facing projects to get a feel for how the
other half lives.

Raw data size is an issue of course, especially with such a large
import, but my main thought is to make things easier on mappers. If
mappers see that the state field is generally populated, they'll feel
they need to fill it out every time -- not a lot of extra keystrokes per
feature but it adds up. I also believe that manually examining the tags
is vital for great mapping -- that's one good reason to have
human-readable tags -- and every additional tag populated with redundant
information makes that job a little harder. (I'm looking at you, brand,
brand:wikidata, and brand:wikipedia!)

It's by no means a show-stopper, though, and I'm certainly not going to
run around the state removing addr:state tags if they appear.
