I just stumbled over
http://earthenginepartners.appspot.com/science-2013-global-forest

More info under
http://earthenginepartners.appspot.com/science-2013-global-forest/download.html

It is a scientific data set generated from landsat imagery for global
forest loss/gain, but which also contains data for forest cover on a 30m
grid.
It is licensed under CC.

While this would not be for everywhere, but there are plenty of regions
where OSM has no forest data and importing this data would be quite
interesting.
The way I would imagine this to happen is to somehow polygonize the data,
so that larger areas of forest are generated.

What do others think? Is their license permissive enough to even
contemplate this?
