The map matching is an interesting idea: I think OSRM can return a list
of OSM node_id's from a matched route and it should be able to handle
one-ways fairly well, giving you the 2+ distinct directions for PTV2
tagging. You would just have to work backwards from the node_id's up to
the way_id's to build a relation of ways. The big obstacle I see to this
is that often highway ways need to be split strategically where routes
turn, end etc.
Still, just building relations from whole ways could be a good starting
point for a big network import. Adding ordered stops to the route
relations would be easy conceptually, but any splitting of the ways
would need to be done manually.

Since bus routes are relations, you could use the lines as an overlay

the lines are accurate. What I go by to create routes is the
authoritative bus map of the agency. Example: official map

OSM relation

(While I was looking this up I noticed that someone had gone in and
renamed all the routes to no longer match the official bus route names..)

We are not sure, but the gtfs files we're using have the shapes of
the routes as lines. It is likely we'll end up manually adding
routes, since automation would create some issues sometimes.
Mapbox map matching might be helpful here, but we haven't looked into
it yet. We are focusing on the bus stops now.

Hi Leif,
I’m curious about your thoughts on potentially adding bus routes
automatically? I’ve been chipping away at adding bus routes in my
area manually and it takes quite a bit of time and attention to
detail. I am having trouble envisioning how that could be automated.

Hi everyone!
After completing the buildings import in Raleigh, NC, we are
moving on to the bus stops. We have set up a Tasking Manager
project, so importing should be ready to start once all comments
have been addressed.
* Size of import: Fewer than 2796 bus stops (many have already
been added to OSM, and will be updated rather than deleted and
replaced).
* Tasking Manager project:
https://tasks.openstreetmap.us/project/120
* Wiki page:
https://wiki.osm.org/wiki/Research_Triangle_NC_Transit_Import
* Start time: Sometime in May, 2019
Here is the file of bus stops we plan on importing:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1SbcWF8U8vzJGRg7cWWCBfgTy9X4n-hCB
-- We will manually adjust and improve the locations of bus
stops before importing, since that seemed to be the largest
issue (some stops were up to 10 meters away from the actual
location of the stop).
We will start sometime later this month if no issues are
raised. After the import is finished, we will likely attempt
adding bus routes, either automatically or manually. We will
send another email to this list before importing any routes,
however, since that is a separate import.
Thanks,
Leif Rasmussen
