I may have missed part of this thread, but have you tried telnet-ing from the 
actual IMS
server to the domain in question on port 25 (using his mail IP and domain 
name)?  With that
you could see if anything weird is sent back from his side and then also, if 
the test fails,
the other admin could immediately check his log files to see what his system 
did not like
about the session.  Again, I'm sorry if I'm repeating stuff that has already 
been mentioned
here.
