It's would be possible to patch the IMS executable to use a different
delivery schedule. I don't think you can change the 54 tries, but you could
shorten the time needed for them. Indeed, I think I did this so that my
gateway server didn't hang onto mail for hours after the main server was
brought back up after maintenance.

This is easy to do because the delivery schedule is a text string in
SMTPDS.exe. Just change it to one of the same length, and you should be
fine. (But if you don't know how to make changes to a binary executable
file, I'd suggest not attempting it!)
