We have run IMS server successfully on NT4 Server, W2K Server, with
Outlook Express clients on NT4, W2K Pro, XP Pro.
The environment is a school where the kids log on to different machines
each time. I had implemented a 'poor man's IMAP' by having the users'
OLEXP file stores on a server, so that they could see downloaded mail
regardless of which machine they used. OLEXP won't actually let you
specify a remote filestore, but a twiddle to the registry fixed that.
We just upgraded to XP SP2, and sadly we have been getting data
corruptions when downloading mail. The problem was fixed by relocating
the file store on the hard disk.
It seems the end of the road for IMS, as using the local PC drive for the
mail file store isn't acceptable.
So... is there a cheap (or free) IMAP email server around? Or can you
think of a way round my problem? Changing the email client isn't really
attractive, but anything considered!
outlook sucks so much ass that i'm surprised that you even tried.
that said, since they are logging into machines, can't you specify they're
"my documents" dir for outlook? (that can be remapped anywhere, including
a server share like \\server\%username%$ )
