Yesterday I started to get hundreds, no thousands, of emailed error
messages from AVP. I stopped and restarted all services and it seemed OK.
When I got in this morning the Trashfinder Trash folder had thousands
of files and so did the AVP temp folder (over 70,000!).
I checked the settings in the AVP control panel and they had not
changed. However, when I tried to apply the setting I got the message
that it could not find the scan engine executable. A quick check
confirmed that it was missing. This is our fault as we had unknowingly
deleted the exe while experimenting with the automatic update of the
virus definitions.
That is not your problem, but I am concerned that AVP has no mechanism
for dealing with this problem. The obvious solution being to send an
email to the postmaster that the AV program was missing/not working and
then stop all email services.
We are using Sophos AV and have no complaints about it.
