Here is the response from Apple’s support website. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409 However, if you’re still unable to get Spotlight to work properly … i.e. You want to re-index the db, the trick is to delete the hidden folder called  ".Spotlight-V100” and then restart your computer. However, the issue would be ……. How do you delete a folder that you can’t see in Finder? This can be done only in the terminal window. WARNING: If you make a mistake you could loose all your data. Use the command at your own risk. In Finder Go to Utilities and start Terminal sudo rm -fr /.Spotlight-V100/ Please note that if you put a space between the / and . you will loose all your data.  Also you will have to run this as an Admin user on your Mac and you must have a password which you will prompted to provide when entering this command.
