Is the file locked? In Get Info, unlock it (clicking on the little
padlock), the try deleting it.
Try Force Empty trash (holding Option when clicking Empty), and Secure
Empty trash.
You could also try to repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility, and
Repair Disk (using your Install disk), then empty or force empty the
trash. In Disk Utility you could also try Erase Free Space (if you
have the patience - it can take a very long time).
If these methods don't work, boot up in Safe Mode (hold Shift at start
up), then restart normally. You could also run fsck. For that you'll
need to to start up in single-user mode (hold Command+S while starting
up), then enter " fsck -f ". When done, enter " reboot ".
Finally, you could try the command line method (but ONLY if you are
familiar with Terminal). In Terminal, go the Trash directory by typing:
cd ~/.Trash
Press enter. Then type:
sudo rm -i yourfilename
Press enter. Enter your password, if asked (no characters will be
seen on the screen, nor will the cursor move), press enter. Confirm
the deletion. Type:
exit
Press enter. Quit Terminal. I'll repeat, be careful when using
Terminal. Commands must be entered exactly right, including spaces,
case-sensitivity, etc.
I had a similar problem a while ago. My file got deleted only after I
ran fsck, then force emptied the trash.
