When it doesn't wake, just try closing the lid and opening again. That used to work for me sometimes.
Try changing the power settings to see if a change happens. I think there is an option which also puts the hard disk to sleep after a while. Unselect that and see what happens If you manually shut the lid and then try to wake the machine, does it work as normal?
