I don't have firsthand experience with a mac mini or an iMac but I do own a MacBook Pro and a 3.5 inch microphone works just fine. You need to go to the audio preference pane though and set up the jack to work as output or input. And that too is only for the 13 inch version which has integrated input and output. I would assume the case to be similar with the mac mini and iMac.
