MS Word (and I'd assume the rest of the office apps) do have a feature in the preferences to save the file automatically every x minutes you specify. However, it says it will save the "recovery information" and not versions of the file. So it may not be exactly like what Lion offers but it has bent there for years as far as I can remember, and on both windows and mac.
