Spectator standing, banned from the top two divisions of English football
after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, could be introduced to one of the
country's newest grounds in an experiment that many would follow closely.
Leicester Tigers are investigating the possibility of introducing a safe
standing area if they complete their anticipated deal to share the
all-seater Walkers Stadium with Leicester City.

The Tigers' 16,000 supporters are accustomed to standing during matches. A
delegation from the Tigers and Leicester City visited Germany this week to
inspect a possible solution at the home grounds of Borussia Monchengladbach
and SV Hamburg, who have each erected temporary safe standing areas at their
stadiums that can be converted back to seating when required.

"We recognise that terracing is an issue that concerns a number of our
supporters and we want to see whether it might be possible to possible to
install a similar type of temporary terrace construction for Tigers matches
at the Walkers Stadium," said David Clayton, Tigers' managing director.

Among those who support the German model are Kate Hoey, who campaigned for
the reintroduction of standing during her time as sports minister. She
remains convinced it could work in Britain and that the Tigers experiment
could help hasten its revival.

Hoey said: "Football still might say you have got to sit, but if it's
working well for rugby there should be no reason on a health and safety
issue that it shouldn't also be introduced in football."
