Glazer set to swoop Peter Spencer MEN March 7th 2005 MALCOLM Glazer's formal 800m takeover bid for Manchester United is imminent.
Glazer, the US tycoon who owns Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is expected to make his move in the next week. Once Glazer shows his cards and makes his official approach, he will decide whether to ask Irish racing tycoons J P McManus and John Magnier about acquiring their 29 per cent stake. M.E.N. Sport understands that the duo are well aware of fans' opposition, and - with one eye on next week's Cheltenham Festival, where McManus' famous green and yellow silks will be seen in many races - they will be reluctant to accept Glazer's offer of 300p per share, having already indicated that their investment at Old Trafford is long-term. Sean Bones, vice-chair of fans group Shareholders United, said last night: "J P McManus and John Magnier are the key figures. Glazer has been defeated in the past and it is vital we keep up maximum resistance.'' Shareholders United, who have been bolstered thanks to 25,000 fans signing up to their anti-Glazer campaign, have been working closely with other fans' organisations to ensure opposition does not become fragmented. Meanwhile, Glazer's former lawyer Tom Ajamie - who worked for the Florida-based tycoon for seven years until they fell out - has told of Glazer's determination to take over United. He is reported to have warned that Glazer would increase ticket prices, which is one of the fans' biggest fears. ------------------------ Yahoo!
