Your club needs you (Bury)
By Clive Tyldesley Telegraph 02/04/2005

We can become so desensitised to the troubles and strife of the world, it is
only when someone or something close to our hearts is
in peril that we are moved to respond. I have lost count of the number of
Football League clubs whose fragile finances have placed
them on death row, and yet it was only when I heard of Bury's present plight
that I put my hand in my pocket.
I grew up in a house with the Bury manager and goalkeeper as neighbours. My mum
took me to Gigg Lane before I was born and my dad
even did a bit of coaching for the club. He sometimes claims to have converted
John McGrath from a centre-forward into a
centre-half, nothing to be proud of when you consider how many forwards McGrath
went on to dismember.
Bury are in serious financial trouble at present and have only two players
contracted for next season, but you won't find a long
face around the place. The spirit of the club refuses to go under. On Good
Friday, a 'Fill the Ground' Appeal more than doubled
their average attendance to 6,000.
Last month, a beer festival raised more merry revenue. Today, they entertain
their local rivals Rochdale at the ground where I fell
for football. It keeps you young to look up an old flame from time to time. Try
to get to see your local team before the season is
out.
