I hope you will forgive me another very personal message. My mum, May, died today. She died peacefully and I was with her.
Over the many years I've contributed to this List I have rarely mentioned my mum for she was always in the background when it came to Manchester United. She did come with dad and myself for my very first match in 1954, but very rarely thereafter. She was happy for the two of us to be together, always making the butties and ensuring we had enough of everything (plasters, clean underpants - you know the score!). In May 1968 she came home from work with some fantastic news. She had been up to London Road station and bought us first class tickets on the Wembley special. That, as much as anything else, made the day perfect. She always wanted our days to be perfect. Over the years a large number of you, from every corner of the world, have been to my mum and dad's house and sampled both their hospitality and my mum's cooking. She was always delighted to meet you and it added to the wonderful world which is 'our' Manchester United. So I ask you to forgive me the personal message but she was truly somebody special. She may not have been to see the Reds often but she was always there with us. Like my dad she is now having a quiet word with her old pal Sir Matt.
