Market roof caves in, killing 56

Feb. 24.

Around the world, roofs are collapsing in public buildings. This Moscow
tragedy has the same characteristics as the recent collapse of Terminal
2E at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, France. It is also similar to
recent roof collapses in Poland and Germany.

Public buildings have become opportunities for architects to express
themselves. Unfortunately, architects have little training or expertise
in structural engineering and often push the structural engineer to the
limit — or beyond — to express themselves.
