About the Artist

Jayanthi Raman moved to Portland from India in 1989. Ten years and many
concerts later, Ms. Raman has become a recognized persona in the Portland
art scene. She has been hailed as a "cultural treasure" by Phil Hunt, the
critic and connoisseur of art in Portland, and as a "world class dancer"
and "scholar of dances" by dance writer and critic Martha Ullmann West. An
exponent of Bharatha Natyam, Raman is versatile in Mohini Attam, the
classical dance from the state of Kerala.
Raman studied dancing from age four, initially from Kalakshetra and then
under legendary gurus Padmasri Adyar K. Lakshman and guru J.
Venkatachalapathy. She is a renowned artist with over ten years of
performing experience in India, before moving to Portland in 1989. She has
established herself as a serious performing artist, teacher and
choreographer, receiving rave reviews and awards for her dances in
Portland, over the past decade. She is well known for her precise footwork
and her eloquent abhinaya (facial expressions). She is also proficient in
classical vocal music and nattuvangam. Her choreographic talent and
originality are evident in her ballet productions in the past years. Ms.
Raman's productions include Vande Mataram (1999), Bharatham (1998), Shiva
Shakti (1997), Krishna Leela (1996) and Valli (1995). She continues to
maintain strong ties with India, traveling often, researching and learning
with her gurus and peers of dance in India. She was recently awarded a
grant by the Regional Arts and Culture Council, Portland, to do research
in Natya Shastra, the ancient literature of dance in India.
AID, Portland is pleased to present Dr. Jayanthi Raman's newest production
"SHIVANJALI", a tribute to Lord Shiva, the supreme lord of dance.

AID is a non-profit, non-political, secular and charitable organization.
Its prime objectives are to raise awareness about poverty and related
issues, raise funds, and to make charitable contributions for the
development and welfare of the underprivileged and rural communities in
India. This development and welfare is achieved through assisting,
implementing and supporting charitable projects focusing mainly on
literacy, education, rural development, family-planning, healthcare,
social welfare, empowerment of people and environmental responsibility.
These above-mentioned projects are mostly located in villages, rural
areas, slum areas or in other economically underprivileged regions.
AID was founded in Maryland about 10 years ago and has grown ever since in
the U.S and in India. Currently, there are 25 chapters in the U.S, 3
chapters in India and one chapter in the United Kingdom. As of now AID
supports about 29 different projects in about 19 Indian states, reaching
out to more than 18000 underprivileged people. The Portland chapter is
perhaps AID's newest chapter and it is our intent to bring forth the
ideals of AID to the great Northwest. This concert is being organized as a
fund-raiser for all the activities we would be supporting in India. We
