Clearly the need for pks for opensolaris developer preview is an impediment to advancing the community. As I see it we have two factions the "old school" and "new school". Now being an old man I still fall under new school since I never employed the "old school" standard of "Operating System/Networking (ON)" I rather expect to have build tools available in usable pkg form, in what ever form or shape that may take. Secondly, I expect to be able to install same with out jumping through an endless set of impediments.
Ips is great but unfortunately the list of packages is very limited. While stating the obvious or complaining is one response to the situation, we have the option to get involved and work as a community to provide that which we require. However, to do this we need clear and concise directions and or accurate documentation to convert existing packages to ips/pkg system. I have built a tool "IpsPkgTool" that address ease of use for the underlying ips/pkg system but must admit to being in the dark as to how to proceed to start conversion of available packages into the ips/pkg format. I have a local repo "/var/pkg2/repo" now I need illumination on how to proceed. Can someone, anyone hand me a flashlight, candle or other source of illumination. If we can find a straight forward solution perhaps we could add the functionality into IpsPkgTool for real ease of use.
