The same question can be asked of Gnome and KDE or mozilla and webkit or ...... The answer is the same: sometimes different people like doing things differently enough that they must (because they want to) remain exclusive. (Even if two projects are going to end up fulfilling nearly the same requirements, the path they took to get there could be very different.
