I'm unaware of any efforts in this area; for what it's worth, I recommend cdrecord despite its usability disadvantages, as it at least is usually possible to do whatever you need with it. But really, you're probably better off asking the desktop community. The Indiana project generally operates more as a consolidator of content from other projects, not an originator.
