Hi Calum,

Thanks for putting this together and getting the discussion started...

Biases: I use both Mac and Windows XP extensively and have been using (and implementing and designing) desktops since '81.

One panel or two: Two. The Apps/Places/System menus take too much space for a single panel and the Launch menu, required for a single panel config, buries most everything a level deeper. Two panels also gives more room for launchers - one click access to your favorite stuff. ;-)

Applets/Launchers on panels: The spec is a good base. Note that compiz defaults the expose function to the upper-right corner so I would put the clock in that corner to minimize accidental triggering of that function. Try to absolutely minimize desktop icons by placing them in the panel.  I would add a couple of "places" to the right of the System menu, maybe Computer, Home, and ? Be generous as they are much easier to remove than add. BTW, there needs to be several pixels between launcher icons, maybe 6 pixels for both aesthetics and to minimize mistakes. Should probably check with Soraya on the spacing.

Icons on desktop: Icons are too easily obscured by windows. Put the important items in the top panel. Only the "Welcome" icon should be on the desktop - makes it real obvious where to start and likely to be removed later - the About OpenSolaris menu item should give continuing access to the Welcome info.

Desktop context menu: I would put Open Terminal as the top item (frequently used) and Help as the bottom item (infrequently used but second/third most visible position in the menu), but probably not worth maintaining differences from the GNOME community for this alone. The rest looks good.

Places menu: Home (drop "folder"), Documents, Downloads, Desktop, ...  Documents, Downloads, and Desktop should all be visible as top level folders in Home. This makes navigating to Downloads easy for apps that allow the user to specify where to save downloaded files.

Administration>Network: Leave the menu item as is since it currently (P2) bring up an information dialog about what to do.

My 2 cents...

Frank

Right now it only covers panel and menu layout; more sections will be
added over the next couple of days. However, I'm sure there's plenty
for you to get your teeth into already, e.g.:

- One panel or two?
- Launch menu or Apps/Places/System menu?
- What applets/launchers on panels by default?
- Icons (e.g. Home folder) on the desktop by default, or empty desktop
by default?
- GNOME or KD... no, let's not get into that one :)

Fire away...

Cheeri,
Calum.
