I think you're confusing "Mesa" (an open source implementation of OpenGL) and "vesa" (the video driver that uses the standard interfaces defined by the Video Electronics Standards Association for all video cards, which manufacturers adhere to so their cards work in BIOS and early boot modes before their custom drivers can attach, or in general use before their custom driver is installed).
