Sun sells both machines and tests on both. If you have an Ultra 20 you won't be able to use Barcelona, it's a different socket. Maybe you should had checked in laptop-discuss because there's more users in there knowledgable about power management. There was a discussion on there about Tickless System Counter (TSC) and PowerNow on K8 MP, which is only supported on Barcelona and above. My Ultra 20 M2 is AM2 (1218), while Barcelona needs Opteron 2000 socket so I will not be upgrading. Ultra 40 users should be able to just fine.
I needed a new system at the time and there was no hint that they would use Intel, but the Ultra 24 is sure sexy. I bought my desktop because construction and compatibility, though I prefer Intels for one reason or another supporting Sun is the right thing to do.
