OpenSolaris 2008.05 fits the need of most Solaris developers and students. The
issue is that the current ISVs have not moved forward with the reference model
and have spun of their own versions. Nothing wrong with that, depending on the
vantage point, as you can get Belenix with KDE/KOffice.

Three main points are in having Office suites, compilers, or multimedia apps on
Live CD/DVD distros. OpenSolaris 2008.05 was initially a reference Live CD x86
distro. ISVs build from the 'reference standard' to make fancier distribution
versions.

What people may expect is a OpenSolaris 2008.11 (Live/Install) DVD distribution
which contains a recent snapshot of the IPS packages. That is the 'everything +
the kitchen sink' edition most people are looking for. Then, you have the SPARC
edition of OpenSolaris 2008.11 to look forward too.

Many students in India have worked with OpenSolaris 2008.05 for development and
basic student needs. Some of us pushed GNOME 2.22.2 and OpenGL 2.1 graphics
support. You can look at it more as to bring a 'solid' desktop environment will
provided compilers, multimedia, and office suites as the 'value add' components.
People can make a 'Ubuntu' clone if they want to....

So anyhow, I'd like to see an updated Live CD snapshot for Aug 2008 of
OpenSolaris 2008.x with the newer GNOME 2.22.x release and latest ON build
93/94.

Blastwave.org/Sunfreeware.com can fill in other areas as well as Sun's IPS and
other IPS providers...
