What happens when you try to boot the new BE (opensolaris-4 in your post)? You 
have only mentioned an error when mounting it, that's why I'm asking. In the 
workaround I have posted you don't have to mount the BE. If you can boot your 
System into the new BE you are likely to succeed.

Please note that in my workaround the temporary BE is not necessary at all. I 
have only created it as a security precaution. I did not want to install the 
new SUNWipkg and its dependencies in my current work environment. If you are 
not able to mount or boot any BEs start with step 2.
