You mention that we ship java and that it is relatively large. I believe that in an upcoming release of java (6u10?) there will be a way to install a JRE with a minimal set of libraries - any additional libraries an applet/java program requires will then be automatically downloaded at runtime. This could save a significant amount of space. I'm not sure if this will be released in time for the November release though.
