According to Gerard's truss traces, the applications try to
connect to an orbit socket (application -> at-spi-registryd ?)
and this gets a "connection refused" error, and I guess the
application retries these connect attempts over and over
again?

One thing that I observed is that on opensolaris build 108 the
desktop becomes extremely slow after enabling "System" ->
"Preferences" -> "Assistive Technologies" -> "Enable assistive
technologies"; followed by logout / login to the gnome desktop.

I think part of the problem is that on build 108 at-spi-registryd
doesn't start at all.

On SX:CE build 104, at-spi-registryd would automatically start
after enabling assistive technologies, and the desktop doesn't
become slow. But I've not yet been able to reproduce a
hang with SX:CE build 104 and at-spi-registryd...
