I received a copy of "Loke Wan Tho's Birds", a coffee table book brought out
by the BNHS and Oxford University Press. It contains some beautiful
photographs edited by Rishad Naoroji and Hira Punjabi. The book also
contains extracts from Loke Wan Tho's diaries. Those interested may please
contact BNHS for price and courier details.

Subject: Loke Wan Tho, Dr. Salim Ali's birding companion

The BNHS will be bringing out a book on Loke Wan Tho who was Dr. Salim Ali's
benefactor and birding companion. As Salim Ali wrote in his book, ".in the
twenty-two years that this inestimable friendship flourished that there was
hardly a birding expedition, international bird conference or bird
photographing holiday which Loke did not share with me personally or with
munificient financial support.." (Fall of a Sparrow, 1985). Loke Wan Tho
came from a business family in Singapore which the family lost when the
Japanese took over Singapore during World War II. During the war he and his
sister had to take shelter in Mumbai where he met Salim Ali. They became
friends for life. After the war Loke re-built his empire with his business
acumen. But he continued his friendship with Salim Ali and did a number of
birding surveys with him. Loke Wan Tho died tragically in a plane crash in
1964.

Lady Y.P.McNiece (Peng), Loke Wan Tho's sister was keen that her brother's
memory be kept alive corresponded with the BNHS and Rishad Naoroji for
publishing a book. She recently wrote:-

This is to let you know that I have heard from Datuk Chan that the final
stage of the book has been reached and that I shall be notified when the
copies will be ready for shipment to Singapore and India.

Meanwhile, I have been sent a copy. I am well pleased with the book, which
I think is a fitting tribute to my brother. The contents made interesting
reading and the photographs have been reproduced extremely well, considering
that they were taken many years ago. I am also glad that Salim is featured
in the book. It is because of their friendship in the first place that this
book has come into being. The initiative has come from Bombay and I believe
the book will sell well in your country. I notice that Oxford University
Press has been mentioned as a co-producer and Kuala Lumpur is named as one
of the countries as a distributor but Singapore does not appear to be one.

My brother, a Singaporean and a prominent one and I, myself, the sponsor of
the book, being also Singaporean, leads me to enquire if the book will be on
sale here. I would be grateful to know.

Best wishes

Peng McNeice
