I am not familiar with either species, unfortunately. Additional pictures
(showing details) of the tree in question would be helpful, if at all possible.

Can it be Pittosporum dasycaulon or Pittosporum wightii ?

This link gives Pittosporum dasycaulon as Notable endemic tree, shrub and
climber species of the Western Ghats found in Uttara Kannada:
http://ces.iisc.ernet.in/hpg/envis/sdev/appendix2.pdf.

Description of Pittosporum dasycaulon:
http://books.google.co.in/books?id=zU7acuLfWA4C&pg=RA1-PA1556&lpg=RA1-PA1556&dq=Pittosporum+dasycaulon&source=web&ots=VXClQ0RH1Z&sig=JLAVl-kMAAXe1jC4V3nVOyWPymw&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=6&ct=result (from
 a book)

Shrikant ji's book states it (Pittosporum dasycaulon) (only species mentioned
of Pittosporum- though stating Pittosporum wightii to be similar to it except
for the inflorescence in Allied species) to be occasional in evergreen forests
at high elevations in the Hills.

Howevver, the following link (giving descriptions) states this (Pittosporum
dasycaulon) to be rare, along Western Ghats, while stating Pittosporum wightii
to be common, along Western Ghats:
http://books.google.co.in/books?id=M0ucOe89GZMC&pg=PA115&lpg=PA115&dq=Pittosporum+dasycaulon&source=web&ots=cTw47WLdMk&sig=MPhL1IqghiPoCUKq5C3PzuZ4i9g&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=8&ct=result#PPA115,M1

However, I couldn't find any picture of these species.

A very long shot, but it looks like it could be Pittosporum tobira or P.
viridiflorum. Neither is native to that area, however. Could it be a cultivated
plant, or is it definitely native?
