Thanks, Dinesh ji, Some extracts from Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caryota_urens
*Caryota urens* is a species <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species> of flowering plant <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowering_plant> in the palm<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arecaceae>family from Sri Lanka <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka>, Myanmar<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myanmar>, and India <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India> where they grow in fields and rain-forest clearings. The epithet *urens* is Latin<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin>for 'stinging' alluding to the chemicals in the fruit. They are commonly called *solitary fishtail palm*, *toddy palm*, *wine palm* or *jaggery palm*. According to Monier-Williams, it is called *moha-karin* ("delusion maker") in Sanskrit. This species is solitary-trunked to 12 meters in height and 30 cm wide. Widely-spaced leaf-scar rings cover the gray trunks which culminate in a 6 m wide, 6 m tall leaf crown. The bipinnate leaves<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaves>are triangular in shape, bright to deep green, 3.5 m long, and held on 60 cm long petioles <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petiole_(botany)>. The obdeltoid pinnae <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinnae> are 30 cm long with a pointed edge and a jagged edge (hence, jaggery palm). The 3 m long inflorescences<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflorescences>emerge at each leaf node, from top to bottom, producing pendent clusters of white, unisexual flowers <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowers>. The fruit<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit>matures to a round, 1 cm drupe <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drupe>, red in color with one seed<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seed>. Like all *Caryotas <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caryotas>*, the fruit contains oxalic acid <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxalic_acid>, a skin and membrane irritant. As these plants are monocarpic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monocarpic>, the completion of the flower and fruiting process results in the death of the tree. This species is called *kithul* in Sri Lanka<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka>. It is the source of kithul treacle, a liquid jaggery<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaggery> .[1] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caryota_urens#cite_note-0> Other good links: http://www.floridata.com/ref/C/cary_ure.cfm (details), http://ayurvedicmedicinalplants.com/plants/6553.html (desc. with a pic.), http://www.plantapalm.com/vpe/photos/Species/caryota_urens.htm (a few pictures). 2009/1/14 Dinesh Valke <[email protected]> > ... *Caryota urens* ... fishtail palm, jaggery palm, toddy palm, wine palm > Regards. > > > > > On Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 4:28 PM, Thiruvengadam Ekambaram < > [email protected]> wrote: > >> >> >> On Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 3:47 PM, Rajesh Sachdev <[email protected]>wrote: >> >>> Where is the attachment. >>> >>> On 1/14/09, Thiruvengadam Ekambaram <[email protected]> wrote: >>> > Friends >>> > >>> > This tree I saw on Coorg mountains many places. >>> > Please ID >>> > >>> > -- >>> > With Warm Regards, >>> > >>> > THIRU >>> > (E.Thiruvengadam) >>> > >>> > Mobile 9987886892 >>> > >>> > Wildlife Activist & Photographer >>> Mumbai, India. >>> http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/wild_mumbai/ >>> www.rajesh-sachdev.blogspot.com >>> >> >> >> >> -- >> With Warm Regards, >> >> THIRU >> (E.Thiruvengadam) >> >> Mobile 9987886892 >> >> >> >> -- With regards, J.M.Garg "We often ignore the beauty around us" Creating Awareness about Indian Flora & Fauna: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jmgarg1 For learning about our trees & plants, please visit/ join Google e-group (Indiantreepix) http://groups.google.co.in/group/indiantreepix?hl=en --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "indiantreepix" group.
