In principle I do not have anything against such movement. In fact it will
create an awareness which is probably not so widespread now. But there are
some trees which are naturalised in India. Would anybody be shocked if I say
that grapes,, pomegranante, tomato, potato, tobacco are Not native. Even
green chilly!
But my worry is about the ornamental trees. Tabebuia,so abundant in
Bangalore, chorisia speciosa so lovingly nurtured in Delhi, Baobab, and a
host of winter flowering annuals are also exotic. Whereas I deplore the
monoculture which has been adopted by the forest dept. at many places, and
the trying of exotic trees; for several other non-forest varieties, it is
difficult to justify restricting to native plants and trees. Let us admit,
apart from various varieties of jasmine (Which again I suspect is an import
from Persia, and lotus. there are very few garden varieties of native trees.
Please give it a thought.
