   1. Fireflies emit 30 thousand pulses of laser light in each flash. This
   went unnoticed in over 100 years of research , which includes Dr C.V.Raman.
   This discovery by G.D.Baruah and A.G.Baruah of Gauhati University, after 30
   years of research, published in Journal of Bio-Science is acclaimed as a
   significant achievement of 21st century.
   2. Carmo Noronha of Bethany Society, Meghalaya , has transformed the
   cultivation pattern in Meghalaya in 8 years by modifying the concept of
   Jhum, and developed a system of hill-slope farming without the traditional
   burning.
   3. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has allotted Rs 1000 Crores to save Ganges from
   pollution.
   4. Mataprasad Tiwari of Bundelkhand, 200kms South of Lucknow, has created
   a garden of 30,000 fruit trees in barren land, in 19 years of persistent
   planting of trees.
   5. Hand made paper, reduces pollution by 70% as it uses non-wood raw
   materials.
   6. The Solar Housing Complex in Kolkata is completes powered by Solar
   Energy. The housing complex has 25 villas, swimming pool, has gravity based
   sewerage system, solar street lights, battey operated pick up vans, etc.

   innovative electronic LPG Optimum Burning System.
   9. Rag pickers are our green sentries. In Mumbai alone,last year, they

   10. Annual e-waste in Mumbai is 19,000 tonnes last year. Number of
   computers in India by 2010- 7.5 Crores. Number of disposable computers -20
   lakhs. Mobile phone users in 2007- 20 crores.
   11. There is no clear legislation that defines e-waste.
   12. E-waste contains toxic elements such as lead, mercury, arsenic,
   cadmium, chromium.

1. Geographical area under forests in India is 20.6% against the target of
33%.

2. 41 % of Country’s forest cover degraded to some degree.

3. Per capita availability of forest in India is 0.06% against world average
of 0.8%.

4. 2000 Sq.kms of forest  was diverted for non-forest purposes between
2005-08.

5. Rs 100 crores of timber lost every year due to forest fires.

*Water and Land pollution*

   1. 84 % of replenishable ground water , is made available for
   agriculture/livestock. The rest 16% is made available for
   domestic/industrial/power uses.



*Global facts*

   1. The rise in average temp is 0.8 degrees since 1880.
   2. India is 5th largest emitter of green house gases.
   3. India per capita emission of carbon di-oxide is 6% of that of a US
   citizen.
   4. Increase in CO2 emission in India  is 88% since 1990.
   5.  Gangotri Glacier is retreating 30 metres every year.
   6. If sea level rises by one metre, 7 million people in India will be
   displaced
