Dear All, I really think it is impossible to identify grasses and sedges from photos, however good. The keys of these families and others like Eriocaulaceae require characters not observable in the photos of the kind circulated here. The Cyperaceae keys are highly technical even at generic level and any attempt to simplify identification of these will only lead to misidentification. I know at least four Cyperaceae experts and none of them will give an identification based on photo. In addition, the generic names have often been merged, split, changed, so Cyperus of one might be Pycreas of another and so on and so forth. Considering the diverse nature of the family and the taxonomic rigour required for identification I request none here to take a short cut in identification. There are excellent keys for Cyperaceae of certain regions like Maharashtra and Karnataka which can be a starting point. Otherwise a proper specimen should be sent for identification to experts like Dr. V. Prasad of BSI (presently at Kew gardens) or Dr. Henry Noltie at Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh. I feel the same about identification of Poaceae and Eriocaulaceae. Aparna
