 Here is the more typical (at least in the USA) form of T. x smithii:

 Flowers are in large, nodding clusters. This hybrid does come, more or less, 
true from seed. 

 Other lighter-colored selections (perhaps F2 hybrids?) such as yours and this:

are indeed in the trade. I'm certain that your specimen is T. x smithii; I'm 
just not certain if it is a separate, named cultivar.
