Thanks very much Gurcharan ji and Gurumurthi ji. Shrikant ji had provided me the ID of *Pupalia atropurpurea* for this herb. While compiling common names for the ID, got surprised to find that the species is now considered synonym of *P. lappacea*, a large perennial scrambler undershrub. Both species are described in Cooke's Flora of the Presidency of Bombay<http://www.archive.org/stream/floraofpresidenc02cook#page/496/mode/2up> .
