Syn: Bromus annuus Jacq. ex Stapf; Bromus patulus Mert. & Koch Common names: Japanese brome, Japanese chess Annual grass reaching 90 cm; leaf blade 10-30 cm long, 3-6 mm broad, pubescent on both surfaces; panicle spreading and lax, up to 30 cm long, with 2-8 branches at each node, 5-10 cm long with 1-4 spikelets which are 12-20 mm long, 4-5 mm broad, lanceolate-oblong with 7-12 florets; glumes unequal lower 5-7 mm long, upper 6-8 mm long; lemmas elliptic 8-10 mm long, side view 2 mm, margin mebranous, awn subterminal, 5-10 mm long. Common as weed and in wastelands.
