Hallo Ranjini,

this is caused by a bark beetle (German name Buchdrucker Kaefer)
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buchdrucker_(K%C3%A4fer)
Unfortunately I did not find any english site. If I find a good one, will
post the link here.
The female bore just underneath the bark and deposits eggs on each side of
the "channel". The larvae then bore further away from the main channel and
feed on the wood. Sometimes you will find a very small hole at the end of
the channel, where the creature comes out.
Your Foto shows the Log, probably nearby one would find the bark as well,
with the mirror-pattern. I have collected a few barks and I used to bring
the pattern on a pottery or sometimes print it on the paper. It is in fact a
disease, but as along as the number of beetles is small and they use old
trees I don't mind beetles carving beautiful patterns in the wood.

Regards
Nalini
