The question of Solanum verbascifolilium vs S. erianthum, Phyllanthus niruri
vs P. fraternus (or P. amarus), Sambucus ebulus vs S. wightiana, and similar
such cases where Indian specimens were identified with Western species, but
later turned out to be a new species or different species already known, I
have been raising on this forum or separately with Garg ji and Tabish. This
creats a problem of synonymy if we don't mention say Hook.f. (non Linn.). If
the plant already in the thread turns out to be Solanum verbascifolium, we
may have a situation where we have a diiferent name for species described in
older Indian Floras plus also the Western species say introduced recently
into India. In this case we may have both Solanum verbascifolium and S.
erianthum growing in India, and we will have to be very careful in linking
synonymy with older Floras. Tomorrow say someone introduces Sambucus ebulus
in India from Europe, and it escapes into natural vegetation, we may have
both species in India, and again problem of linking synonymy with Older
Floras.
I suggest that we should have a special focus on such species. There may
not be more than 100 or so such species, but I suggest we may prepare a list
of such species, keep this list somewhere on our websites (Indiantreepix,
Flowers of India) with differences from our species, and when members are
out of the country (and many I know travel widely) they are on lookout for
these species, photograph these, and we have them for ready comparison with
our species. This will solve many of our problems.
Please think about this.
