Dear Nick Macer, Thanks for the lead. It is Rosaceae no doubt but the pic 
in Flowers of Himalaya seems to be showing wilted flowers and the plant 
that I saw was leafless. Since this was found near human settlement, I 
presume that fruits are edible. Regards,
