Anand ji, it is the Stem 3-5 ft. long. Also good example of sessile and
sheating leaves.
Sessile meaning leaves without a petiole or pedicel attached directly by the
base to the stem, and Sheating meaning base of the leaf clasping major part of
the upper internode.

regards,
Rashida.

if you see Rashidaji's first picture, it has a long stem at the endof which
there is a buch of flowers. I had meant that. Maybe my botanical training is
not so strong as to give it a name understandable by eveybody. But just for my
knowledge, what should it be called: stem, stalk or stick, or by some other
name?
By the way Rashidaji also saw this flower with the roadside flower girls in
Mumbai.

Ambika, the name is ginger lily and not garlic lily as I mentioned earlier.

Best wihes,
ak

Anand ji, what would sticks mean? are they stems carrying the flowers?
The stems have very large leaves and have one or two flowers blooming at a time.

Hope you are not talking of gladiolus.

If you insist on these ginger lilies, I am very eager and curious to see a
photo of what you mean, of course if that is feasible :)
Regards.

Anand ji, the butterfly ginger lilies are not sold as sticks, BUT usually sold
in bunch of say 2 - 5 flowers.
What you may be referring is perhaps: rajanigandha, the Mexican tuberose --
Polianthes tuberosa

If I am not mistaken its sticks are sold by the roadside flower girls in Mumbai
say in Kemps Corner etc. Correct me if that is a different flower. I tried it
as a cut flower but it is not successsful. It must be growing wild in some
nearby places of Mumbai.

For information of the group:
As we speak, CABI-UK scientists Dr. Djami Djeddour and Dr. Harry Evans
are exploring South and West Sikkim for pests and pathogens on wild
Hedychiums; native Himalayan species (H. gardenerianum, H. flavescens,
H. coronarium) which have become invasive in Hawaii, etc. after being
introduced there. This is Djami's 3rd visit after the first one with
Dr. Sankaran of KFRI. The project is in collaboration with NBPGR and
through NBA, and ICAR. One of our youngest forest officers Dr. Abhay
Bhaskar Barapatre himself an entomologist has spent some time with
them. We hope they get good results.
