The *manchineel tree*, *Hippomane mancinella*, is a species of flowering
plant <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowering_plant> in the
spurge<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spurge>family (
Euphorbiaceae <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euphorbiaceae>), and the only
species in the monotypic <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monotypic> genus
*Hippomane*. Manchineel is native to
Florida<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida>in the United
States <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States>, the
Bahamas<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bahamas>,
the Caribbean <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean>, Central
America<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_America>,
and northern South America
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_America>.[1]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchineel#cite_note-1>The
name "manchineel" (sometimes written "manchioneel") as well as the
specific epithet mancinella is from
Spanish<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_language>manzanilla
("little apple"), from the superficial resemblance of its fruit
and leaves to those of an apple <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple> tree.
A present-day Spanish name is in fact *manzanilla de la muerte*, "little
apple of death". This refers to the fact that manchineel is one of the most
poisonous trees in the world.
