Bark is far more diagnostic in Betula. However, if it is from timberline or alpine altitude (above 3000m) there are more chances of being B. utilis, a species with smooth light brown bark exfoliating in to thin paper like sheets. Another species, B. alnoides, is restricted to temperate areas. DSRawat Pantnagar
