Thank you Dr Chauhan for the correction. I assumed that the spellings given in 
Flowers of India website and the Trees of Delhi book by Pradip Krishen were the 
correct ones. Both these sources spell it as Mallotus philippensis and so does 
this article on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mallotus_philippensis
