Dear Jairam Rameshji, I just had the opportunity to spend three days at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru as an invited expert for their Annual Review exercise. Coming on the heels of the BSI/ZSI exercise, this was an eye-opener. NCBS does not call itself a premier institution; they merely say they are striving to excel. They are practicing pretty much what was suggested in the BSI/ZSI Task Force report, and doing so with great success. They have abolished disciplinary boundaries; one of their youngest faculty members has a Ph D in Chemical Engineering and is working on modelling the dynamics of biological molecules. A senior scientist has a degree in Biophysics and works on insect nerve conduction, as well as response to saline soils of estuarine paddy varieties in collaboration with a Plant Physiologist at the neighbouring Agricultural University. A young ecologist is collaborating with geologists, archaeologists, and mammalian taxonomists in studying the fossil mammal community of caves. NCBS has many formal instuitional collaborations that have benefited them greatly. For instance, four years ago, they initiated work in ecology, a new field for them, by asking Wildlife Conservation Society, Mysore to start an M Sc programme in Wildlife Biology. NCBS is also actively promoting Citizen Science; they have wholeheartedly supported a young scientist’s initiative to set up a web-based participatory migrant bird watch programme that now has over 1000 amateur bird watchers throughout India contributing good data. By the way, they are taking full advantage of, indeed thriving under their autonomy. All of this has convinced me that, after all, what has been suggested in the BSI/ZSI Task Force report is all very good scientific practice. I sincerely hope that the BSI/ZSI scientists will also view it in a positive light.
