Dear Friends of eflora, I am surprised to read the comment made by Dr.Pankaj.
I am sure the eflora is mainly for botanicals. But this need not stop going out little bit. I am sure we cannot have any detailed discussion here but certainly I wish to add that like many common man you too had the notion that GM crops are for increasing the yield. The issue of hunger has many reasons but certainly not the production in the farming. This had been repeatedly proved that the world produce more than what we all could eat. It was told that if the whole produce is equally shared to all the heads of the world then in just three months every one will be affected by obesity. There are reports by FAO and other agencies on this. More over the Gm crops that we have now are either to kill one of the many pests of a crop and to with stand any dosage of Herbicide.There is no GM crop to increase the yields. I feel the eflora members should discuss the impact of GM crops on the biodiversity and emergence of weedicide resistant weeds and transfer of the resistant genes from these plants to other wild relatives. We may not discuss the technology and the politics surrounded over it but certainly we should have space to discuss the gene transferring to wild relatives, genetic pollution and contamination issues. They are very much important for the biologists like us. I am a conservation educationists and an organic farmer for more than a decade. My yields from the first year itself is better than my chemical farming counter parts. Hope I have not crossed the boundaries. R.Selvam.
