I have a couple of suggestions:

1. use keywrods and Species names for semi-automated grouping:
The subject line should carry the Keywords  suche as :

Proposed / Accepted / Identified species/  Sharing Image / Comment
followed by the binomial  name.

If none of above apply, of course a general one could be used.

2. Carry t he Eflora  idea of  Community further :   Different
volunteers may collect for different  subgroups families / species
etc, and reduce the load on any one person.....

After all that its still human effort . ( I m willing to volunteer for
a family/ species:)
